VI International Seminar on Irish Studies
VI International Seminar on Irish Studies

Despite being a relatively small country, Ireland has a very rich and dynamic cultural tradition. This International Seminar aims to bring that culture closer through the study of Irish literature, music, film, art and history, in the hands of its most immediate protagonists: renowned writers of the current literary scene, documentary filmmakers, musicians and actors. To this end, papers will be given by specialists in the field of Irish Studies, in the areas of literature, sociology, linguistics, musicology, history and film. The Seminar will also feature the participation of three plenary speakers: scholar in contemporary Irish-language prose and poetry Rióna Ní Fhrigil (National University of Ireland, Galway); wildlife presenter, documentary maker, environmentalist and academic Eoin Warner (National University of Ireland, Galway); and traditional Irish musician and academic Desmond Wilkinson, known principally as a flute and whistle player and a singer. Acclaimed poet and novelist Theo Dorgan will also give readings, followed by a discussion. Irish singer-songwriter and frontman of the Irish rock band The Frames Glen Hansard will also be attending. In addition to being a Grammy-nominated musician, Hansard is also a celebrated actor. He appeared in the BAFTA-winning film The Commitments (1991) and, most notably, starred in the Irish musical drama Once (2007), for which he composed and performed all the songs together with co-star Markéta Irglová. Once received several major awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly” and was subsequently adapted into a successful stage musical. Further activities will include an introductory Irish language workshop, an exhibition of small prints about Ireland, and the official launch of the new Céilí Band of the University of Granada. To stimulate interest in Irish Studies and disseminate the research of early career scholars, a Postgraduate Roundtable will be held.

The event is organised by Dr. Pilar Villar-Argáiz, Dr. Paula Camacho Roldán, Dr. Carmen Aguilera-Carnerero and Dr. Stephen Hughes. The programme is included below:
