The Discursive Construction of Enonomic Inequality
The Discursive Construction of Economic Inequality:
CADS Approaches to the British Media
ed. Eva M. Gómez & Michael Toolan
This book analyses diverse public discourses to investigate how wealth inequality has been portrayed in the British media from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Using a variety of corpus-assisted methods of discourse analysis, chapters present an historicized perspective on how the mass media have helped to make sharply increased wealth inequality seem perfectly normal. Print, radio and online media sources are interrogated using methodologies grounded in critical discourse analysis, critical stylistics and corpus linguistics in order to examine the influence of the media on the British electorate, who have passively consented to the emergence of an even less egalitarian Britain. Covering topics such as Second World War propaganda, the ‘Change4Life’ anti-obesity campaign and newspaper, parliamentary and TV news programme attitudes to poverty and austerity, this book will be of value to all those interested in the mass media’s contribution to the entrenched inequality in modern Britain.
«This fascinating and insightful collection addresses one of the most pressing issues of our time – the discursive construction of inequality. It does so with all the rigour that corpus linguistic methods afford. With a range of techniques exploited to investigate various sites of inequality, the book provides a comprehensive overview of how corpus-assisted discourse studies can address issues of class, poverty, social mobility and austerity. Timely, powerful and methodologically rich, this is an essential read for scholars in corpus assisted discourse studies and critical discourse studies.» – Christopher Hart, Professor of Linguistics, Lancaster University, UK

Spanish Thinking about Animals
Spanish Thinking about Animals
ed. Margarita Carretero González
Traditional cultural practices involving animals are being seriously questioned, heavily regulated, and, in some cases, even abolished in Spain.
This essential and timely text brings together prominent scholars working in the ever-expanding field of animal studies in Spain, drawing from a variety of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences to provide an interdisciplinary look at the animal question.
In choosing an angle to approach the study of ethical, aesthetic considerations, and cultural representations of animals, this collection moves away from the ideology of human exceptionalism that is still predominant but progressively losing force in the field of animal ethics in Spain. It instead includes contributions by scholars who have chosen to look at animals, to a lesser or greater degree, through an antispeciesist lens, displaying the committed attention to and respect for animal life that characterizes critical animal studies.

Frankenstein. El texto de 1818
Frankenstein: El texto de 1818
Mary Shelley
Trad.: Margarita Carretero González
Comprar: 24 €

English Grammar in Focus: Text-Linguistics provides a general introduction to the textual level of the English language. A functional approach is focused first on the clausal level considering speech acts and information units. Then cohesion and coherence are examined as the distinctive categories of texts. Finally the various groupings of texts into types, genres and registers are described.
This is the fourth of the four volumes that comprise the series English grammar in focus, a collection of handbooks that is aimed to familiarize university students with the essentials of English grammatical description. Although each volume can be used as a self-contained coursebook, the series as a whole is intended to serve as a comphehensive introduction to all levels of grammatical description, from the morpheme as the smallest unit of grammar, to complex textual units.

This book proposes a comprehensible, context-sensitive and flexible framework for the development of pedagogy for autonomy in language education. The «framework» metaphor highlights the effort to identify structuring elements in the authors’ stance towards pedagogy for autonomy, which fall into three domains -the context, the learner, and the teacher. In each domain, the authors raise ethical, conceptual and practical issues that are crucial to their perspective and offer a basis for reflection on learner and teacher development towards learner and teacher autonomy. The book proposes a common definition for learner and teacher autonomy within a vision of education as transformation and empowerment. Pedagogy for autonomy is operationalized through a set of ten general principles.

English grammar in focus. Words and morphemes provides in its first part an overview of linguistics as the scientific study of language, presents grammar as one of several levels of linguistic description and introduces some of its key notions, such as grammatical units and tools for grammatical description and representation. The second part is a detailed description of the two smallest units in the grammatical hierarchy, namely the morpheme and the word.
This is the first of four volumes that comprise the series English Grammar in Focus, a collection of handbooks that is aimed to familiarize university students with the essentials of English grammatical description. Although each volume can be used as a self-contained coursebook, the series as a whole is intended to serve as a comphehensive introduction to all levels of grammatical description, from the morpheme as the smallest unit of grammar, to larger stretches of language. Future volumnes in the series will cover the clause, the phrase and text and discourse.

D.H. Lawrence: Italia a media luz
D.H. Lawrence: Italia a media luz
Traducción y prólogo: M.A. Martínez-Cabeza

While Music Lasts. A Workbook for Students of English for Musicology presents a collection of materials designed to provide specific practice for a course of this type. Its aim is to offer a comprehensive array of activities for particular topics developed in the classroom. The book covers four main areas of interest and skills: activities in part one focus on the comparative approach to the study of English and music as communicative discourses, with specific references to aspects such as rhythm and grammar; the second part is devoted to technical music vocabulary; the third part includes activities related to text typologies understood as fundamental academic skills for music undergraduates; finally, the so-called Seminars in part four offer several text-oriented groups of tasks in which the strategies explored in the former three sections are combined and put into practice.

Enhancing Autonomy in Language Education. A Case-Based Approach to Teacher and Learner Development

The book explores the idea that pedagogy for autonomy requires the integration of teacher and learner development and can be enhanced through a case-based approach in teacher education.
A case-based approach values experiential professional learning and expands professional competences necessary to promote autonomy in schools: developing a critical view of (language) education; managing local constraints so as to open up spaces for manoeuvre; centring teaching on learning; interacting with others in the professional community.
Two strategies to implement the approach are presented and illustrated. The first one involves teachers in designing, implementing and evaluating experiences of pedagogy for autonomy, which are the basis for writing professional narratives and building a case portfolio. The second draws on teachers’ pedagogical experience as the basis for the construction of case materials where experiential elements are combined with theoretical input and reflective tasks, so that the teachers who use those materials can reflect about and explore their own practice.

El Viaje del Anillo. Mapa Narrativo de la Tierra Media
Eduardo Segura
